    Victor Davis Hanson may be a little too ready to reach conclusions based on anecdotal evidence; i.e., his personal experience in his (declining) local community.

    This local experience is certainly significant, but as a guide for further, more rigorous research.

    Or it may be exceptional evidence, because most people live in situations where those effects are essentially invisible. They still exist, but are not visible to those people.

    To be fair, VDH uses anecdotes and personal experiences to highlight issues, but he is known for impeccable research and analysis. But he understands that stories are a powerful way to quickly summarize and bring to life data.
